Diversity and Inclusion

About Our Diversity & Inclusion Program

At Foxcroft, we understand the importance of a diverse school community and how each girl's boarding high school education experience is enriched by living among people from a variety of backgrounds. Here, we embrace our similarities and celebrate our differences. Our program encourages students, faculty, and staff to share perspectives and pursue a variety of learning opportunities essential to maintaining an inclusive residential community that fosters meaningful relationships and mutual respect.

— Moriah F. ’24

“Foxcroft to me is truly a home away from home. Many are drawn to it because of the uncommonly beautiful campus. But the beauty isn’t the trees, the horses, or the flowers for that matter. The beauty of the campus comes from the people that go here.”

  • Diversity and Inclusion Committee

Building a great team requires a diverse group of people on the team. Our Diversity and Inclusion Committee is comprised of faculty and staff members whose collective experiences, backgrounds and cultures allow us to view problems and challenges from a variety of lenses. The group meets monthly to discuss topics related to diversity and inclusion that impact the entire school community. We also plan learning opportunities for students and employees, both on and off campus, and are responsible for providing feedback and guidance to the School administration.
  • Our Diverse Curriculum

A multicultural curriculum includes experiences that allow students to explore events, concepts, issues, and themes from multiple perspectives. Our commitment to building upon girls’ cultural proficiency skills is reflected in our globally focused course offerings, including World Literature, AP Human Geography, International Relations, world languages, and World Religions, to name a few. A number of electives are offered in the areas of history and the social sciences to provide a variety of learning opportunities that raise cultural competency. Additionally, by integrating subject matter across disciplines, students are able to understand that all things in life are interconnected.
  • The Grade-Level Experience

Topics of wellness and diversity have been integrated into grade-level experiences, addressing issues such as socio-economic diversity, food insecurity, cultural identity, cultural appropriation, boundaries, LGBTQ+, and identity inquiry with sensitivity and thoughtfulness.
  • The International Student Experience

Foxcroft has a full-time Director of International Student Services who supports girls in various aspects of their life, ensuring they are fully prepared for college. Each year, girls from more than a dozen countries enroll at Foxcroft. In addition to a special orientation program, international students are involved in workshops and other initiatives that help them adjust to life in America. Girls participate in school clubs and athletics, as well as hold student leadership positions, enriching the experience for all members of our community.
  • Diversity through Service

Foxcroft students engage in local and global communities through service learning opportunities that foster an understanding of different cultures and environments. Organizations that we support include the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation, Sprout Riding Center, Goose Creek Association, Seven Loaves Food Bank, Banneker Elementary, and the Middleburg Humane Society. The Junior Class Philanthropy Project has benefited such organizations as Audubon Naturalist Society, Martha's Table, Youth Service Opportunities Project, Heifer International, Uryadi’s Village, and the Polaris Project.

Student-Led Cultural & Affinity Groups

Through open discussion and a variety of activities, student-led groups help increase understanding about issues of diversity and encourage students to engage in active listening and learning. For girls who share a common identity or life experience, affinity groups offer an important framework of association that inspires them to participate in our community of sharing.

  • International Travel

Foxcroft encourages students to broaden their view of the world and grow their cultural competency by participating in school-sponsored trips to places around the globe. Through these unique opportunities, our students have traveled to such faraway places as Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands*, France*, Honduras, Spain, Nicaragua, Peru, and Senegal.

*In addition to traveling to these countries, we also reciprocate through some unique cultural exchange opportunities by hosting students on campus from Ecuador and France.

Courageous Conversations with Foxcroft Women

Courageous Conversations is an annual event held during Reunion Weekend and hosted by the Alumnae Council Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Each year the Committee chooses a relevant topic for alumnae and students to discuss allowing for meaningful connections, a greater understanding of one another’s unique perspectives, and the exploration of the School’s history across generations of Foxcroft women. These discussions may happen more frequently or at other times during the year depending on interest in a particular topic or current events.
